When I was 25, I applied to Amazon Web Services (AWS) and I failed.

That didn't matter; What stuck with me, to date, was the written assessment I had to write - "Why is it always Day 1?"

Excerpts from my essay: "...On Day 1, fear and uncertainty of the end results create desperation. What happens then, is the conditioning of the human mind to achieve the end goal, with any means possible, including taking risks that may potentially push you two steps back.

However, in the state of Day 1, you push on because nothing has been achieved. You trudge on, you become resilient, you become creative, you create solutions to achieve results. And finally, Day 1 is complete.

But Day 1, as we know it, is a concept. The achievement of one goal alone is insufficient to ensure sustainability. This is why Day 1 has to start all over again, with new goals and the same fear, uncertainty, excitement and calculated risk-taking attitude. The moment the priority of Day 1 is blanketed, growth and progress stagnates and, to extreme extents, complacency and irrelevance starts consuming. This can also be interpreted as the state of comfort...

stasis. Day 2."

Two months ago, for whatever reason, I pulled this up in the middle of the night. While I did not join AWS, the values/ principles of the company continues to be relevant to me, especially so in my role today.

Sharing this in hopes that those who chance upon this, is reminded of their own Day Ones (:
