What can Michelangelo teach us about finding Product-Market Fit?

Michelangelo, created what is widely considered his most astounding work, David, from a marble block that had been severely damaged by a novice carver who mistakenly drilled a hole where the statue's legs were supposed to be.

The city's leader pleaded with numerous artists to fix the the marble block but everyone said No.

Michelangelo was the only one willing to take on the challenge, believing he could craft a figure by altering its stance.

Reflecting on his masterpiece, David, Michelangelo stated, "I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free."

Often, as founders, the first thing we ship will resemble nothing more than a partially formed block of marble, but the path to product market fit often starts at this step as we keep chipping away at the block until the product finally hits PMF.

This process can be frustrating but as founders we just need to find the "Angel within the marble block" and set it free by talking to users!

A recent graduate didn't show up for the interview that was on the calendar after an initial screening and didn't even have the courtesy to respond to the email/call later.

Later, we found out that the candidate was skeptical because we're apparently just a 7 person's company which also happens to be backed by YCombinator, Accel Partners and Goodwater Capital :)

I'm not sure how to feel about this!

Substack reached $10M ARR with 3 people and Uniswap and dydx reached $10bn in liquid market cap with <14 people!
