40 lessons at 30

  1. Learn to experiment. Don't be scared to do things and get your hands dirty. Starting an NGO at 23 was an opportunity to challenge myself and I learned. I have created many things that failed but I learn always.
  2. Say yes to an opportunity to develop. Many yes that I said during my volunteering days ended up becoming key skills for the job that paid. The job you do when you don't get paid might pay you later.
  3. Don't go around looking for mentors or jumping to everyone to mentor you. Be exceptional, and mentors would find you. This is the way I have found my mentors. Sometimes we don't even have formal agreement. They choose to mentor me.
  4. Passion might not be enough, so do not be scared to work and earn some money to work on your passion or purpose. Perspective is key.
  5. Sometimes to move forward you have to move backwards. I did this many times.
  6. Don't call yourself what you are not. Build to earn that reputation. Compound interest truly works.
  7. Join communities, sometime that's the way you get opportunities and support system
  8. Take responsibility for your mistakes, life, and rejections. Don't expect anyone to tell you sorry when you need to get to work.
  9. Focus on the process and build credence for your work. The only way you can know the merit of something is over time.
  10. Be present. The opportunities of the future are in the present. Don't focus too much on the future that you lose both the present and the future.
  11. Have a support system to talk things through when things are rough. Asking for help is an invitation but don't be a parasite. Be sensitive.
  12. Be careful in staying in a job that doesn't add anything to you in the long term, it may affect how you perceive life even if it seems the pay is good.
  13. Don't be shy about your background or story, it is what makes you you.
  14. Give your best to a task or work. Even if you fail at it. You end up learning or building something for yourself
  15. Learn to have uncomfortable or difficult conversations and do it respectfully. You will be respected for that.
  16. Always leave the first and last impression.
  17. Don't be scared to talk about your work. Sometimes no one will help you if you don't tell your story
  18. Learn to give credit when it is due. Don't hold on too much to everything and treat your team as partners and colleagues.
  19. To make money you have to spend money.
  20. Someone you know, know somebody that you know. Be careful of how you treat people. People keep receipts.
  21. Balance giving to the outside world, with giving to your family. Are you the same person on the inside as you are on the outside?
  22. Smile, it helps you ease pressure and facilitate good relationships with others
  23. Reflect on who you are. Sometimes you change and you may not know if you don't reflect.
  24. Beware of external pressure, don't let it pressure you into making decisions that are not good for you.
