While reflecting on #womenshistorymonth I’m reminded of the tremendous obstacles and challenges my own mother and grandmother had to endure and overcome in order to make a better life for their children.
Having lost my father in the Bosnian war in the early 90's, my father's mother, took it upon herself to financially and physically provide whatever support she could muster for my mother, my sister, and myself. My grandmother could have simply left to live with her other son in Germany and have us fend for ourselves during the war, but it was this selfless decision that changed the course of all our lives.
We immigrated to Germany in '92 and the 4 of us made the most of our situation while living in multiple refugee settlements. Grandma tended to our home, myself, and my sister while my mother was cleaning homes to make a living. My sister and I learned German rather quickly as kids and managed to get acquainted in school. Unfortunately we never managed to fit in or settle due to relocations.
In 1997, after 5 years, came our biggest break in a long while and our application to relocate to the US was approved. We arrived with just our clothes on our backs, and a couple of luggage bags. Not a cliche, that's exactly what happened. Things still weren't necessarily peachy for us after arriving. We settling into a predominantly immigrant apartment complex and tried to make sense of this new world, its customs, and even its language. My mother took a job in housekeeping for a notable hotel chain in downtown Atlanta. Without the ability to drive or own a car she exclusively relied on public transportation to commute to and from work. She struggled with English but persevered with determination, ethics, and hard work. My grandmother resumed her responsibility of caring for our home and our wellbeing. Being my closest connection to dad, my grandmother was ultimately the foundation of my character and who I am today. She was one of the kindest and gentlest souls I have ever met.
While mom and grandma were the bedrock of my upbringing, this post wouldn’t be complete without a special shoutout to another #strongwoman, my sister Zinaida Vugdalic! After arriving in the US, my sister and I, again, quickly got a reasonable handle on the language. Being the older sibling, however, Zinaida was thrust into managing our family paperwork and translating. It was her perseverance and drive to do good for her family in this new world that got us through some tough times and enabled her own success later in life.
It’s been well over 25 years now since our arrival in the US and I could write an entire memoir about our experience as Bosnian-Americans but I’ll conclude this post by highlighting the selflessness, kindness, compassion, determination, and courageousness, as just some of the qualities, of the women in my life. I am incredibly grateful for them and attribute my own overall success to these women. For that I recognize them this month!
