Short Tata Stories (SHO-T-S)

  1. A proud Indian tennis champion

Born in 1879, she was one of India's first women tennis champions. She won more than sixty prizes in tennis tournaments during her lifetime.

What is interesting and unique is that she played all her tennis matches wearing the Parsee saree, driven by her immense pride in India.

Perhaps she also did this to make a point to the British, who were ruling India at that time.

This was Meherbai (Mehri) Tata. One of the most accomplished ladies of her time.

Exactly one hundred years ago, at the Paris Olympics of 1924, she was drawn to represent India in the Olympics tennis tournament, in the mixed doubles. This was also the first time India participated in tennis at the Olympics.

Mehri Tata's partner was Mohammed Sleem, a well known tennis player of that time. Olympic records show that their team got a bye in the first round, but did not play the second round.

The reasons for this are not clearly known. The Hindu newspaper of 17th July 1924 mentions this. A later article in the Hindu, written by Stan Rayan, goes on to say - "Did (Mehri) Tata pull out to allow Mohammed Sleem to concentrate on his singles? Or was she unwell? Did the organisers stop her because she wanted to play in a saree?"

I have not been able to find out the real reason, but it would surely be interesting to find out!

Meherbai Tata was also an expert horse rider, and among the first Indian women to fly, as a passenger in the Zeppelin airship, in 1912. She was a feisty pioneer in the cause of women's rights in India. She spoke in India and in the USA, calling upon the then Government of India to pass a proposed bill to outlaw child marriage.

As we enjoy the Paris Olympics of 2024, it would be appropriate to take a moment to remember versatile and bold women like Meherbai Tata, who were so proud of their Indian heritage, and were amongst the original feminist icons of our country.

Happy 75th birthday, Mr. Gavaskar !

Sunil Gavaskar has been an inspiration to me since my school days. As he has been to millions of Indians.

"The Little Master" was the first batsman to score more than 10,000 test runs. He dominated the game during a career than spanned 125 tests. His audacious batting against the then formidable pace bowlers of the West Indies is etched in cricketing legend forever. Thereafter, he has re-invented himself as a remarkable cricket commentator.

This month, Gavaskar celebrates his 75th birthday. On this wonderful milestone occasion, I asked him three questions, and he generously responded to my queries. Here is the brief interview, with Gavaskar's verbatim responses.

  1. What keeps you so young and energetic at 75 years?

What's wrong with being 75 and being energetic? If one loves life, then one looks forward to enjoying it the next day too.

  1. What is your approach to work, in whatever you do?

Approach to work has to be with dedication, determination and discipline. Preparing for the next day is very important, and a big help in easing the work effort on the day.

  1. What do you value most in life?

Integrity.

These simple, powerful answers are so inspiring. Look forward to your kind views.

Please join me in wishing "The Little Master" Sunil Gavaskar a wonderful happy 75th birthday !
