Harlan Mandel is the CEO of Media Development Investment Fund (MDIF), a mission-driven investment fund that supports independent news and information companies globally.

With over 110 investments in 39 countries since its inception in 1995, MDIF has provided over $145 million in debt and equity financing to foster free and independent media in emerging markets.

Harlan has extensive experience managing investments in news outlets across five continents and has played a crucial role in designing innovative impact investment tools for MDIF.

Prior to his role at MDIF, Harlan served as Deputy General Counsel at the Open Society Institute and practiced law specializing in international litigation, intellectual property, and new media law.

He holds a Juris Doctor (J.D.) from Columbia University School of Law and a Bachelor's degree in International Relations and Asian Studies from the University of Pennsylvania. He has also studied Private Equity & Venture Capital at Harvard Business School.
