The thing about being an investor is that you hold a set of beliefs, believing them to be true but not constant. The trick is being able to evolve your beliefs at the right speed, neither too early, nor too late.   In my investing journey, I have observed and voiced the following many a times -       Indian consumer is a (basic) value conscious consumer -       The Indian consumer market is not deep -       Family strongly influences an individual’s choice in India -       Most of India’s consumption is concentrated in top few cities

I think it is time to take a critical view on all of these. The coming decade promises an unprecedented transformation in the Indian consumption market. With an anticipated growth in GDP per capita from USD 2000 to USD 5000 by 2031, we are set to witness a profound impact on the way India consumes.   1.     Indian consumer will continue to evolve with increased appetite for quality, convenience, and innovation. We already see this around us. e.g increased willingness to pay for convenience - be it for uber over kaalipeeli or ordering from swiggy rather than restaurants (even digitally) or paying for content (OTTs, news, audio, etc), something available freely in abundance. The list of ‘Indian consumer does not pay for X_’ will shrink   2.     Meaningful discretionary spend led by Affluence and Attitudes

Affluence will percolate down meaningfully. By 2030, ~50% of households will have income of >8 lakh per annum, 7% households will have income of >35 lakh p.a. Discretionary categories will throw up large winners. The list of ‘India is a nascent market for X_’ will shrink.   Attitudes: By 2030, almost half of Indians would have spent their formative years in the midst of the digital and booming economy. Unlike the previous ‘balance sheet generation’ that valued assets/financial security, this cohort values experiences and immediacy. This will redefine several industries, from travel and hospitality to entertainment   The traditional family unit is evolving. The era of common family experiences is giving way to a more individualized culture. Every family member now has personal devices, unique content preferences, and even distinct travel and food choices. For brands, this means a more fragmented consumer. Brands that were once household favourites will need to reinvent themselves to avoid being labelled as 'My Dad/Mom/Sis's brand.'

  1. Moving beyond top cities Ecommerce is expected to quadruple in next 10 years from GMV of USD 50 billion to USD 200 bn led by Tier II, III cities. This wil be accompanied by deeper penetration of physical retail: PVR is present in 115 cities (~60 cities in 2016). Dominos in 393 cities currently (235 in 2016). This trend will accelerate. Over the next decade, consumer businesses go deeper online and offline   The next decade in the Indian market promises to be a thrilling & evolving journey, and we should all be prepared to update our mental models
