Been chatting with a lot of friends and colleagues who have been laid off in the past year and it's been heartbreaking to see so many talented people struggle. I've also been a little more attuned to my Buddhist practice in the past 2 years and wanted to share something that helps me when I'm in tough situations. Suffering comes from the gap between the way things are and the way we want them to be. Acceptance of the things we cannot control is the only way forward ... but that does not mean resignation! In Buddhism, we also learn that the only things we truly own are our actions. So here's a little reminder of what this looks like for folks who are going through unemployment:

❌ Things you cannot control: the job market, getting terminated, the actions of your past employer, the past, actions that may or may not have contributed to termination, getting hired, the economy, living in an economic system that requires you to work to live

Just take a deep breath and let go of these things. Your energy is wasted lingering on the things above.

✅ Things you CAN control: making a job hunting schedule, applying to jobs, working on resume, practicing interview skills, DMing your contacts on LinkedIn, researching jobs you want to target, looking for free online courses and Youtube videos on skills you want to build, looking up videos on how to get more interviews or how to excel at interviews, pacing yourself so you don't burn out, setting up attainable goals, talking to friends, asking for help, organizing your living space, maintaining healthy habits, making space for play and rest to avoid burnout, doing things that help your mental health, building up work samples, revising your resume or work samples if you don't get any calls, taking on a temporary job while you jobhunt, practicing gratitude every day to maintain your outlook and mental health

You actually control way, way more than you realize. Post in the comments: what is something that is helping you through this difficult time? Or what advice do you have for people in this situation right now?
