“Heather ONeill, $20”  Some variant of that has appeared on over 15 gofundmes in the last month.  It’s wildly uncomfortable for me.  I don’t usually include my name publicly when I donate, sponsor or provide mutual aid. Growing up Catholic left me with a deep rooted belief that care and charity should mostly be performed anonymously, without thanks or recognition.  So not anonymizing my donation is tough on its own. Also posting about my giving activity is, frankly, embarrassing and deeply cringe.  It’s also extremely important.  When you are quiet about your beliefs and actions, it’s easy for others to assume you’re doing nothing, and absolve themselves for doing nothing, by association.  So I will say it loud and proud – I’ve been giving to Palestinian’s gofundmes and I don’t intend to stop.  You might read this and think “Oh she’s bragging,” “She’s showing off”. It might feel performative. You might scroll on by without doing anything.  And you might pause. You might be inspired. You might join me and give. I hope you do.  I honestly don’t care if you give because you feel guilty, you have something to prove, you were bored, you were inspired, or any reason. I only care that you do it.  Consider this a challenge and an invitation. Give with me. Give more than me. Give a dollar, give a hundred. Just give.  I’m listing all the gofundme’s I’ve contributed to in the comments. The floor is yours. Comment with your screenshot of giving, and I’ll send you a special surprise. <3  The only way to do this wrong is to give nothing.  Join me. 💜
(PS I also welcome anyone to share other gofundmes for Palestinians; thanks to Sabrina Meherally for inspiring this addition)
