As adults, we often take for granted skills like listening, teamwork, collaboration and creative problem solving.
I’ve had the pleasure of being involved with Odyssey of the Mind for more than 15 years. First as a parent and volunteer, then, as I saw my boys thrive, a coach.
I’ve continued to coach the Structure problem at the elementary school where my boys went, ensuring at least 7 kids each year have the opportunity to develop creative problem solving skills. Every year the kids are met with different challenges and every year we work hard to coach them to be well balanced, creative kids.
This year is no different. The kids learned to be accountable for their actions, respect each other, themselves and the adults donating their time and money to help them.
They learned to put down the tech and use their minds, test ideas by creating MVPs (minimum viable products), and when they work together they’re stronger.
They learned it was ok to fail (a lot!) during practices, we don’t always get what we want but we always get what we need.
They also learned all of their hard work paid off. On Saturday, they competed in a regional tournament and came away with top marks across all areas.
The balsa wood structure our builder spent the entire school year testing and refining, came in weighing 16grams (3 sheets of paper) and held an amazing 775 pounds!
They’re excited to compete in the State Tournament in 2 weeks and earn the privilege to represent the state of Georgia at World Finals in May.
Seeing the smiles on the kids faces makes all of the planning and hard work worth it💙
