The only real difference between instructional design (ID) and learning experience design (LXD) is the modernity of the culture the person is working in.

I've had multiple people and thought leaders try and explain to me their perceived differences between these two, and I have NEVER gotten consistent answers. It's like asking folks to define leadership or learning...

I've also never heard any competencies listed for LXD that were NOT part of my PhD education or my roles in ID.

It HAS been my observation that tech companies and companies with more modern corporate cultures (think unlimited PTO, sexy core values, swag, etc.) are more likely to use LXD, just like in the government, we still hear instructional systems designer (ISD), which is an older term for IDs (and matches the glacial pace of government LOL).

It's also been my opinion that changing a title isn't enough to improve or disrupt our field. We still have LXD order takers and sh**ty eLearning coming out of the LXD space. We also have IDs who are innovating and using all the latest tools and operating with maximum efficiency.

Because good learning, training, education, and instruction is good because it addresses a problem, issue, or opportunity... not because it subscribes to a certain theory or tool or methodology.

Want to know more about the history of ID and how the name has changed over time? I'll put a link to my favorite article in the comments. I consider it a must read to anyone new in the field.

It's cool to attend conferences, earn certificates, watch webinars, participate in content creation and collaboration... but what are you going to DO about it?!

It's great when our companies and clients give us the funds, support, and schedule to attend events... but if we don't have the support to try new things or shift perspectives, then all that hype about a learning culture is just that - HYPE.

Do you have the opportunity and support to come back to your organization or clients and implement some of the lessons? In what way?

And what happened in a situation where you realized you didn't have that support? What did you do next?
