📑 We just published a paper on enabling justice for nature-based solutions in real estate development! 🏡 Nature-based solutions (NBS) can create various environmental and social benefits when integrated into real estate. For example, green roofs can store water, improve air quality, and cool buildings. 🙁 But a relevant critique of building-related NBS is that they affect justice in housing markets (since nature-inclusive real estate is often more expensive, their benefits are accessed more by privileged citizens). 🔎 In this paper, we take up this important issue and explore potential enablers for 'just' implementation of NBS in real estate. 🎇 Our study highlights how integrating both nature-based and justice objectives into real estate development offers a promising pathway to addressing pressing societal issues in the housing sector. ➡ You can find the paper here: https://lnkd.in/e39bnFBY This project has been supported by the EWUU alliance (TU/e, WUR, UU, UMC Utrecht) and executed in collaboration with Juliette Bekkering (Eindhoven University of Technology). Author team: Chayanika Perera, Sophie Klein, Helen Toxopeus, Katrin Merfeld
BTW: what's extra cool about this paper is that Chayanika Perera was a Utrecht University School of Economics (Business & Social Impact) master student in 22-23 and this paper is based on her master thesis in an EWUU alliance (TU/e, WUR, UU, UMC Utrecht) project! She took her learnings on nature forward and now works as a green finance advisor at WWF in the Netherlands. We're so proud..
