📢 A new user research gig with Chayn!
We’re looking for a freelance user researcher to work with us on some projects. You will be working alongside our User Research lead. This is a great opportunity for a an empathic and skilled researcher with some experience in trauma-informed research to deepen their skills and work with Chayn. Given the breadth of our work with survivors from minoritised and marginalised backgrounds in the Global North and our work with survivors in the Global South, we have a strong preference for someone either based in Global South/Global Majority or with significance experience of working with these groups.

We expect the work on this project to take place over two segments with the first being July-August and the latter one October-November.
Across the two segments, you would be:
- Recruiting for 20 user interviews
- Conducting the interviews including live research
- Analysing and synthesising interviews
- Reporting back to internal team and external partners.
We expect this to take approximately 80 hours.

Why did CHAYN take down its chatbot?
This blog post is about why we did that, what we learned, and some insights from a report we did in 2021 for UNICEF’s Safer chatbots project looking at building culturally-aware chatbots. Our research and recommendations fed into UNICEF’s report but we’re now also sharing our research findings as recently we’ve engaged with many people who are working on chatbots and are finding it useful.
We looked at how survivors expressed themselves and asked for help on social media forums. Our team of volunteers and staff looked at Arabic, Bangla, English, French, Hindi, Spanish and Urdu. We found lots of lexical differences! e.g
In communities where talking about sex and abuse is taboo (e.g places where Urdu and Arabic is spoken), many used the English language to talk about sexual assault and consent.
Spanish speakers are more likely to use direct and precise terms to describe their situations.
French speakers may be more likely to use more obtuse terms to describe their situations.
