Highlights
I'm so fortunate to have developed a great relationship with one of the editors of the Well section at The New York Times.
When I came to him with a pitch about people who combine cannabis and working out, it was only about those who use it to make the workout more fun. He pushed me to look at people who rely on weed to help them exercise because they suffer from chronic pain. That led me to discover people who find marijuana helps them overcome deep-seated body image issues and anxiety about being in workout clothes or the gym.
It's ultimately a more interesting piece, and now it's going to appear in the Sunday print edition!
This is a great example of how pitching is so much better when it's a back and forth process. I would love to develop this kind of relationship with more editors!

Thrilled to be doing some writing for NEXO again! My favorite thing to do for my marketing writing clients is tell their customer's stories, writing about their struggles and triumphs in a way that prioritizes the narrative, not the sales pitch.
I last interviewed Kevin Ogar for the CrossFit Journal in 2015 -- it was wonderful to talk with him again and find out how he grew his CrossFit gym by returning to what he loves to do and delegating the rest.
Reach out if you want your client's stories told, showing your audience how your company is making a difference. I'd love to help!
(This article is going to be turned into a series of emails. It could also be used for ads and, of course, social media content!)
Once Kevin’s friend approached him and told him the gym’s future was at risk, he knew he needed to make a change.
“It was either get really good at delegating and trusting other people to do some work or lose the gym,” he said.
When Kevin thought about what he really loved about owning CrossFit WatchTower, it was interacting with the members, coaching the classes, and managing the development of his coaches. Once he let go of the reins a bit and refocused on what he loved, wonderful things began to happen. Not only did the gym gain 30 new members over the last two years, but the current members noticed a change in Kevin after he began coaching more.
