I have grown to love hydrangeas. Perhaps when I was younger I saw them as rather blousy, immodest beasts. Of course the more restrained lace-cap has a particular style which is much less ‘in your face’ and hence more captivating than the more widespread mophead. I chanced across this beauty on my travels recently and was struck by the large mophead bloom in the middle of its lace-cap cousins. Presumably a random mutation. It seems they are both cultivars of hydrangea macrophylla.

It put me in mind of a number of metaphors – dare to be different perhaps, or stand out from the crowd. I was lucky enough to see Richard III at The Globe recently – a largely female cast with a focus on toxic masculinity including the paraphrased call to arms ‘Make Britain Great Again’. But before the end of the play the immortal words of Jo Cox ‘We have far more in common (with each other than things that divide us)’ rang out providing much needed optimism. Given recent awful events in the UK I think this is the metaphor which resonates most.

Words seem wholly inadequate for how many people must be feeling at the moment so rather than dilute the message I will simply repeat her message and thank this hydrangea for stopping me in my tracks. Stay Safe everybody
