I’m happy to share that I’m starting a new position as Financial Agent at New York Life Insurance Company!
Hello!
It’s been some time since I posted, but wanted to let folks know what I’m up to. My goal here is to share both the experience of job searching in a difficult time and the decision to forge ahead with a dream I’ve had for years.
After a four-year term as a city council member in a small city in SW Washington, I naively thought it would be relatively easy to find a good job in the policy world. (I mean, I’m still hoping to wind up my career at UN Women someday.) But it hasn’t turned out that way yet.
I’ve got 20+ years of legit, hard-won professional experience under my belt. I’ve sent out close to 500 resumes and cover letters in the past 6 months. I’ve asked people to put in a good word. I’ve worked with a recruiter to polish my presentation. And I’ve landed exactly 5 interviews in that time and none of them led to an offer.
Applying for a job has been a full-time job with no pay and no guarantees. It has been very disheartening.
I almost started to believe I wasn’t actually qualified to do anything.
But then I started to see the articles about how I’m not anywhere alone in being in the job hunt. 5 years ago, I might have sent out a dozen CVs and been offered my pick of jobs, but there’s slim pickings for lots of folks like me these days. AI makes it a crapshoot to get past the first round of resume scans, because AI doesn’t scan for intangibles or nuance. Changing your career path? Good luck explaining that to a bot.
Layoffs in the tech industry have also complicated the job hunt. A sizable number of people who thought they were set for the future in an industry with lots of growth potential are suddenly on the market again. Who wants to start over in a super high-skill industry with no guarantees and probable pay cuts?
I’ve long thought that the approach to capitalism and economy that values a person only so long as they’re employed, and does not value their lives as complete human beings, is ridiculous. And unsustainable. And now it’s starting to fall apart.
I want to make business that works in a different way. I’m calling it “Business for the Rest of Us.”
I’ve worked with a lot with bigger organizations that are looking to direct venture funds and capital funds and big funds to the underserved. But I’ve also spent some years working with very small scale, local investing. Literally, the ladies down the street who each have $50 to give their local coffee shop for a new grinder in exchange for a years’ worth of free coffee. And this, I’ve discovered, is where I think business needs to be.
So I’m introducing Future Forward, a business incubator for the rest of us. Local, small sale, teaching up, and focusing on people and place. Profit is a given. Check this space for drips each week and watch for our SubStack coming soon. The website launches in the next couple of weeks. It’s exciting times!
I’m looking forward to sharing it with you!
