Holger Caesar

PhD Candidate in Computer Vision

Dr. Holger Caesar is an Assistant Professor in the Intelligent Vehicles group at TU Delft in the Netherlands. His primary research focuses on autonomous vehicle perception and prediction, emphasizing scalable learning and annotation methods. Before joining TU Delft, he served as a Principal Research Scientist at Motional (formerly nuTonomy), where he established three teams dedicated to data annotation, autolabeling, and data mining.12

Education and Background

Holger Caesar earned his PhD in Computer Vision from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Vittorio Ferrari. His academic journey also included studies at prominent institutions in Germany and Switzerland, such as KIT Karlsruhe, EPF Lausanne, and ETH Zurich.124

Contributions and Research Interests

Dr. Caesar is recognized for developing influential datasets for autonomous driving, including nuScenes and nuPlan, and has made significant contributions to the real-time 3D object detection method known as PointPillars. His research aims to improve the scalability of data collection and annotation processes for autonomous vehicles, addressing complex real-world scenarios that these vehicles must navigate.124

Professional Roles

In addition to his teaching and research responsibilities, Dr. Caesar holds several professional roles:

  • Associate Editor for IEEE Robotics and Automation Letters
  • Member of the Board of Studies for the TU Delft Master Robotics program
  • Area Chair for conferences such as CVPR 2025, ICCV 2023, and ECCV 2024
  • Mobilizer for TU Delft's "Pathways to Mobility Futures" initiative.234
