Highlights
Currently, to produce cell-based meat, researchers have been using different types of stem cells, from induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) to cells found in muscle called satellite cells.
Why is Cell Line Development Important? For cellular agriculture to scale, it is important to find a stable and immortal cell line. This cell line will be a constant and indefinite source of stem cells, so animals will no longer be required in the production process. Once a stable cell line is found and becomes widely available for animals of interest (like cows, pigs, and chickens), this will no longer be an obstacle. And the next steps to scale the field can take place.
The Crux: Providing a stable source of cells to create cultivated meat is the starting pont of startups in the cellular agriculture space.
The Challenge: For companies looking to produce acellular products, it is important that they use the right and type of cells to mass produce their product. A company may need to test of different microorganisms to see if it is using the one to make their product. This can take a lot of time and money (buying the equipment, running the tests, etc.).
The Need Companies and services are emerging to help outsource testing services to optimize and test the best cell lines.
Investment Opportunity Recognizing this gap, investors have been looking at cell line providers to invest in anticipation of the demand.
Where to Invest? Currently, Roslin Technologies is the only commercial cell line provider for cell-based meat iPSCs that can divide indefinitely and differentiate into a wide range of cells.
Roslin Technologies presently offers a porcine cell line for pork meat and aims to offer a bovine cell line for beef meat. The company is also looking to develop an ovine cell line for lamb meat and a crustacea cell line.

Cultivated beef maker Sci-Fi Food is targeting to create a beef burger that reduced its production cost 1,000-fold!
Thanks to the founders Kasia Gora and Joshua March, we were privileged to be invited to taste the burger. True to their claims, it has the taste, texture and flavour of the traditional farmed beef!

Companies like Sci-Fi Food are fueling the innovation behind the plant-based meat industry. The next generation plant-based meat will be cheaper and tastier making it easier for big food companies and the consumers to include it as part of its daily protein intake.
-
Blended or Hyrid Meat will fuel the next phase of growth in the plant-based category.

Taste is 'King' and Cost is 'Queen'. The industry will bloom if both demands from the King and Queen are satisfied.
