Highlights
As we witness the start of a new year, it is difficult to celebrate.
The people of Gaza, Palestinians of all religions, treated equally in one regard: their indiscriminate slaughter. They bury loved ones every day, with no future to even think of.
Meanwhile, the world grapples with a skewed valuation of lives and livelihoods, where some command premiums and others get swiftly written off.
The ongoing terror campaign on Gaza has been an unimaginable onslaught on one of the most impoverished peoples on earth, orchestrated by a global power, backed by a superpower and the ones that matter. The vast majority of UN members remain brazenly ignored.
As the death toll approaches 30,000, many continue to deny ceasefire calls, thereby supporting a genocide and an open ethnic cleansing.
Just months ago, the global tech community stood as one against attacks on civilians.
Today, we witness masks coming off at an unprecedented pace, as many within what always felt like a single, harmonious, global community show more concern about penalizing open discussion, terminating employees and leaders, censoring anything that looks like pro-Palestine speech or compassionate content, while disingenuously redefining sincere intent, in chants and calls for justice.
We’ve swiftly become a community where censoring each other takes precedence over saving innocent lives.
What I do see is the tide turning in public opinion and people unwilling to compromise their freedoms. Let us all double down on this and strive to build a new world order: where humanity and compassion again triumph over cruelty, indifference, and political point scoring.
Alongside this, this great region must recognize the criticality of building bridges and at the same time, building greater self-sufficiency; and with it, our own tech, while standing at all times for justice, compassion and freedom.
