Navigating the Toughest Leadership Challenges: When a Hiring Decision Doesn’t Work Out
Leadership involves making tough decisions; I have had to accept that a team member I hired wasn’t the right fit for the role. I have only had this a couple of times in my career, but the first time was hard. In that scenario, it became clear that despite his best efforts, he wasn’t working out. Making the decision to performance manage him out of the team was confronting.
I struggled with maintaining compassion while addressing a situation that needed resolution. It’s brutal to part ways with someone, especially when you care about their well-being and understand the personal impact it can have.
These experiences, however, teach us that leadership isn’t just about making decisions but also the importance of handling said decisions with empathy and integrity. Even when a decision is necessary, it’s crucial to approach it with humanity, providing clear feedback, support where possible, and ensuring the process is respectful.
While facing the consequences of a hiring decision gone awry can be painful, it’s a reminder of the importance of ongoing evaluation and reflection. Every experience, even difficult ones, contributes to our growth as leaders. It’s a balancing act between making tough calls and staying true to our values.
To my fellow leaders, remember that facing these tough moments with empathy and openness can ultimately lead to personal and professional growth—for both you and your team.

In celebration of great team members.
My last post reflected on the leaders I’ve had in my career. Today, I want to consider my own leadership and people I’ve had in my teams over the years.
We all like to think of ourselves as good or even great leaders. Am I a good leader? I hope so! I certainly try to be. I’ve been leading teams for many years, and have come to appreciate that leadership requires flexibility and adaptability. People have different strengths and personalities. It is really important that we adjust our style to best support each person in our team. What works best for each individual? What really doesn’t work? How is doing x for one person negatively or positively impacting other people in my team?
I have worked with some impressive people in my career. I’ve worked with some challenging people too, people who really forced me to step back and think carefully about how to proceed. However, this is about the positive.
The following people come to my mind. I enjoyed working with them and feel they helped me grow as a leader :
Megha K. An innovative thinker and a person with enormous drive to deliver. Her ability to take on multiple complex stakeholders and build strong relationships while also delivering a fantastic customer product is outstanding.
Megha worked at random hours, some work places do not like people not conforming to a particular way or fitting neatly in their corporate box. As a leader I felt I needed to challenge the corporate box as much as possible to allow the team the best flexibility to create something amazing. Embrace the change created by a talented team and help give them the space to succeed. Mega provided me with the most outstanding reasons for non-conformity, lateness or ways of working, yet always delivered.
Carrie Swatten Carrie demonstrated how leading by example and fostering a positive team culture can lead to outstanding results. Her commitment to excellence inspired the entire team.
There are always multiple personalities involved in large product developments. To be successful we need to adapt and get the best out of the multiple teams involved. Carrie was always so positive in complex situations and I learnt that no matter the challenge, creating the best team culture possible helped to drive positive outcomes for the customers and ultimately for the business.
Tiarne Sippel Tiarne has exceptional problem-solving skills and her ability to navigate challenges with resilience is invaluable. Tiarne showed me the power of perseverance and creative thinking drove success.
As a leader we can fall into the trap of thinking we already know the answer. However, give the team the context, outcome required and then support them to succeed.
I encourage everyone to reflect on those who have influenced their careers positively. Who are the individuals who have helped shape you as a leader?
