I spent yesterday afternoon at the White House briefing the Office of Science and Technology Policy, along with representatives from Commerce and OMB, on Artificial Intelligence with my client Common Crawl Foundation. To the uninitiated, CC is the world’s largest training corpus for LLMs, compiled and curated through 17 years of “polite” crawling of the internet. CC is the foundation of almost every well-known AI product like ChatGPT and quite literally put the Large in LLM. What makes CC a unicorn--and why I serve on its Board of Advisors-- is that it is a nonprofit dedicated to the advancement of human knowledge, not corporate profit. CC does not charge for access to and use of its dataset.

We had a wide ranging and useful discussion about CC's dataset and ethos generally, as well as its efforts to expand its reach to a broader, more diverse set of languages while reducing harmful impacts, both on humans and the environment. Many thanks to Travis Hoppe for hosting and assembling the participants, and to my friends Rich Skrenta and Chris Tolles for flying out from California to endure a typical August day in DC. #theycallitaswampforareason.

I had a great conversation this afternoon with the lawyers at Stubbs Alderton & Markiles as part of their AI Expert Speakers series on the topic of “AI, Copyright & Fair Use.” Apparently some of the time I have spent at ALI working on the Restatement of the Law Copyright has made an impression. Many thanks to my fellow Common Crawl advisor Kevin Debre for the kind invitation. Lots to talk about and lots more developing in this important space.
