AI is taking over. There’s nothing left to do. Coding, Content, Marketing, Support, Design… nothing left. Unless you invert the problem.

"Invert, always invert." Wise words from the late Charlie Munger.

How do we invert the “AI is taking over” problem? We ask, “What is AI not good at?”

🤔  Why does it matter: Because we keep hearing about this huge problem, most people rant, complain, show or fuel fear. Some people offer a shallow perspective: "It's not AI that will take your job, but someone who knows how to use AI." We need a better, more insightful and action-driven approach. That’s where the Inversion approach can help us.

⏪ Rewind & Catchup Charlie Munger recommended that inverting the problem was the best way to solve it. Instead of facing it head-on, you would go around and solve the inversion of the same problem. And many times it makes it easier and more practical and less overwelming.

It’s easier if I give you an example:

Instead of “How can I be more productive?”, think, “What makes me unproductive?” This may spark more ideas and less wishful thinking. The same applies to the challenge “How can I eat healthier?”. If we turn it upside down: “What causes me to eat unhealthy?” (spoiler: look what’s inside the fridge).

⏭️ What now? Now, let's go back to the initial challenge: “AI is taking over, so there’s nothing left to do.”

We can rephrase the problem as “What is AI not good at?” In what situations is AI disappointing, unable, frustrating or absent?

Don’t try to guess what happens in 10 years. Focus on the now, next 2. Don’t guess or speculate. In "speculation land," every doomsday scenario is possible - we’re quite imaginative on this front. It’s easier if you specify your area of concern: coding, content, marketing, support, design… Brainstorm and come up with answers, and then transform them into areas where you should focus and find your core. You could even use AI to ask its opinion and brainstorm together 🙃

I’m tempted to say:

It's not AI that will take your job, but someone who knows how to use Inversion 😜

These questions can be scary:

  • What are your hobbies?
  • What do you care about?
  • What’s your utmost dream?

These questions are uncomfortable if asked in the wrong context. It depends on who, when, and where they are asked.

You can feel either connected or vulnerable. You can feel someone is caring or someone is investigating you.

Imagine you're with close friends late at night, music playing in the background. It's a warm summer night outside, or perhaps winter, and you're gathered around the fireplace. The conversation flows and gets more personal and emotional as the night settles in. There's a special bond, and emotions are shared. You feel connected to the people around you, trust them, and are open to sharing your vulnerabilities and insecurities. So, any question can be asked, even if you don’t have a clear answer. You're connecting and discovering together.

🎬

A week later, you're in a job interview—the same questions.

You know that in a professional setting, your reputation is an asset. People are constantly assessing you. You hesitate. Should you give a “vanilla” answer or try to surprise and differentiate yourself? You want to be transparent. You want to show up as you are. But it is too early. You block. You’re not ready. What will you answer?

We hear it all the time:

  • We need to ask questions, more questions.
  • Questions are powerful.
  • Questions are what enable us to know more and connect.
  • Questions are what you need to get information.
  • Talk less and ask more!
  • Questions are the answer! ...

However, as per the example above, please beware: Questions are just a tool—you must know when and how to use them.

PS: this post was inspired by current and past events and my current reading of Charles Duhigg's latest book: "Supercommunicators: How to Unlock the Secret Language of Connection"
