Some praise for Germany regarding solar energy 🇩🇪 ☀

It's often criticised for energy-related decisions (not least of which by Germans themselves!), but there are some good things happening:

☀ In 2023, Germany installed more than one million new solar power systems, an increase of 85% on the previous year. ☀ Enpal, one of the market leaders along with 1KOMMA5°, doubled its revenues in 2023 and is now close to raking in 1 billion € in annual sales.  ☀ Last month saw a new national record for solar output, with more than 10 terawatt hours captured ☀ #1 in the world for per-capita renewables, with 1.4KW of green energy per person (well above the EU average of 0.7KW, the US at 0.6KW, and China at 0.3KW.)

H/T to The Conduit for several of these stats in their last ''Radical Realist'' newsletter.   Overall, the chart below is showing how successful the country has been in rolling out new #solar and #wind energy production (in part due to Germany’s renewable energy law (EEG) which has guaranteed wind and solar producers a high price for power fed into the national grid.)   Thing is, the planet is indifferent to a ''diversified energy mix''. What it cares about is: how much can your reduce emissions.

Energy demand keeps growing, so beyond the growth of clean energy, what needs to also happen is a decrease of the unclean energy (especially in Asia!)

Highly recommend this interview if you are into #deeptech #sciencepreneursip, #moonshots, company building around frontier technologies, #commercialisation and making bold bets on science that might change the world. 🔬 🌏

Sifted interviewed Ilan Gur, a former Silicon Valley entrepreneur and DARPA manager who is now CEO of ARIA, the UK’s Advanced Research + Invention Agency (ARIA).

With a budget of £800m, the UK gov agency was setup last year to fund scientists and engineers to ''push the limits of the possible and unlock breakthroughs that will help societies.'' Also: they'll be giving a workshop at 🔥THE HEAT next month ;)

Some nuggets: ⭐ People as the starting point (as opposed to specific research areas). ''It's people who drive innovation, change in the world. The massive ''step changes'' of human evolution can often be linked back to one person or a small group of outliers.''

🧠 ARIA program directors: scientists with deep sector expertise but who also interestingly have often switched fields and experienced different sectors, giving them a broader perspectives and a ''beginner's view'' on how to tackle new complex challenges.

⭐ Opportunity spaces: a hypothesis documents shaped by program directors which gives efforts a general direction where to focus learning, iteration, adaptation. An ARIA opportunity space should be + important if true (i.e. could lead to a significant new capability for society), + under-explored relative to its potential impact, and + ripe for new talent, perspectives, or resources to change what’s possible. Example: ''Programmable plants'' https://lnkd.in/gYPn47uf

🔮 Other example of areas: scaling compute; safeguarding AI; robot dexterity; precision neurotechnology

✅ One KPI for the agency: one big hit. In a couple of decades, you see one big change in the UK or worldwide that can be traced back to the work of ARIA.

🥊 Where could be that ''big hit''? One possibility: #neurotechnology. Hugely complex, but one where there's tons of research happening and huge social costs, and where the UK as a lot of the needed strengths in this yet very nascent field (e.g. biotech breakthroughs, first brain surgeries happened at King's College, deep ecosystem in research, academia and practicioners)

🇺🇸 What can the UK learn from Silicon Valley? Classic answer here: bigger, bolder bets and more risk taking.

Biggest piece of advice to younger self / other entrepreneurs: ''If you have this one idea you keep thinking about, this one hypothesis your gut is pushing you towards, pull on that thread. It's easy to overindex the downsides and keep from going down the path, but new paths will emerge when you start working.''
