Some of my most exciting work occurs in support of remote indigenous education through Studio Schools of Australia . Last week I had the pleasure of visiting our existing Y10-12 school at Yiramalay in the remote Kimberley Region of Western Australia (The Kimberley is roughly the size of California, with a population of 20,000 people!) to attend the amazing open day that drew families from throughout the region. Just to provide context to it's remote nature, the school is over 300km from the nearest hospital - providing 2-way education, "on-country", to almost 100 local and city kids!

While on-site, the SSA board had a chance to visit the construction site of our second school, Manjali, which is on track to accept Y7-9 students in early 2025 (see photo!!). Special thanks to Hutchinson Builders who have built a mini-town on site to execute the construction, and especially Wayne who went an extra mile to make everyone feel welcome.

Particular thanks to Jennifer Westacott AO, Phoebe van Bentum, Dr Helen Drennen AM, Adele Gott, Tanya Davies and the Yiramalay staff; also June Oscar AO and the local Fitzroy Crossing communities.

What an interesting article!

How to Be Truly Free: Lessons From a Philosopher President https://lnkd.in/gpBzEz4a

Prior to reading this I had never heard of Pepe Mujica (although I do like the sound of his name), or - I am ashamed to say - the transformation of Uruguay. I'd be interested to hear what other people from Latin America have to say about the country now? Have things been as successful as written here?

I relate very much to his comment here -

"You’re free when you escape the law of necessity — when you spend the time of your life on what you desire. If your needs multiply, you spend your life covering those needs."

One of the benefits I've had from starting businesses that become valuable to others (e.g. an entrepreneurial life) is that I've been able to achieve financial security in a stepwise way... which has meant I've been able to meet my financial needs suddenly, rather than watch my needs grow / creep with time ... and never quite catch up to them.

This scope creep in life seems to have such a negative effect.

While I don't find myself running the financial treadmill to the same extent I once did - particularly now that my kids have grown - I do have an ongoing need to build things, and share with others the excitement of seeing problems and trying to solve them. Of creating meaningful, sustainable jobs for people. Of watching positive impact grow and, sometimes, having to tweak things a bit that had unintended consequences.

I wonder if I will, at some stage, feel comfortable to just sit back and be ok with watching other people build things.

Thank you Jack Nicas for this great interview and perspective.
