During a long overdue catch-up conversation last week, a former colleague of mine astutely pointed out that if even she didn’t know about my recent career break, chances were good that the majority of my professional network hadn’t caught wind of it either. A logical assumption that we both agreed I ought to remedy.
While it is unnerving to broadcast personal and career news outside my trusted and supportive inner circle, I’m going to risk over-sharing on social media and hope that a handful of you appreciate the update.
After twelve years in advertising and brand marketing at TBWA\Chiat\Day (2010-2014), J. Walter Thompson Worldwide (2014-2021) and Samsung Electronics America (2021-2022), I resigned for just the third time in my life. The first was early in my career – when I was seeking more responsibility and autonomy, faster growth and a steeper learning curve. The second was more recent – when I transitioned from ad agency account leadership to client-side brand marketing and digital strategy. This third and last time was catalyzed by something else entirely…
Early this year my wife navigated a job change and her former employer enforced a contractual non-compete. This is typical in her industry and we knew she would be between jobs for months. Sitting at my desk (still working from home) back in March, I realized we had been dealt a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to travel the world, visit friends and family, dive deeper into our passions, and enjoy summer in NYC. So I made the difficult decision to resign from Samsung with a verbal offer to return to my position post-sabbatical.
These past five months have been unforgettable. We absolutely made the most of our time together. See Exhibit A: Marina’s Instagram feed. But now the real world beckons. And while I’m grateful to my former colleagues at Samsung for the offer to rejoin the consumer marketing team, I’ve decided to look elsewhere and am eager to begin the next chapter of my career.
In the past few weeks I have begun to reengage my network and identify the industries, sectors, companies and brands that excite me most. As I diligence and hone in, I want to share that I am committed to finding a Brand Marketing role where I can:
- Make an impact on an innovative, talented, mission-driven team
- Build a powerful, resonant brand that is ingrained in culture
- Tell unique stories that create meaningful connections and motivate others to act
- Leverage data and human insights to design creative solutions to complex business problems
- Construct and execute integrated marketing campaigns to help grow the business
If you’ve read this far, let’s catch up soon. Chances are we’re overdue :) And perhaps we can help each other out.
Thanks for tuning in, Hunter
