Doors Open Toronto is coming up in 2 weeks, and there are some incredible opportunities to get inside Toronto's most shrouded facilities. Working in real estate, energy, and infrastructure, we often get access on a professional basis to some of these places, however this is a great chance for outsiders, friends, and family to join us on a look inside. One site of note is the Portlands Energy Centre, a 550MW CCGT plant, while the perennial favourite is the RC Harris Water Treatment Plant dubbed the 'palace of purification'.

Union of Concerned Scientists have a great fact-piece downplaying the SMR hype. While there are some appealing hypotheticals to the tech, nothing has been proven at scale, and there have been some spectacular fails recently. This list provides some criteria for how we might consider some success. For the TL;DR crowd:

  1. SMRs are not more economical than large reactors.
  2. SMRs are not generally safer or more secure than large light-water reactors.
  3. SMRs will not reduce the problem of what to do with radioactive waste.
  4. SMRs cannot be counted on to provide reliable and resilient off-the-grid power for facilities, such as data centers, bitcoin mining, hydrogen or petrochemical production.
  5. SMRs do not use fuel more efficiently than large reactors.
