For anyone with an interest in violent extremism in the post-Soviet region, my recently published article in "Defence Strategic Communications" (journal of the NATO Stratcoms Centre of Excellence in Riga) looks at how the Islamic State group used Russian-language social media to recruit Central Asians for the Syria/Iraq "jihad". Some 4-7000 Central Asians joined IS and other jihadist groups in Syria/Iraq -- about the same number of recruits as from western Europe. Such large scale involvement was unprecedented for a region with little prior interest in international jihadism.
