Highlights
The last week has been horrible. The near future will be horrible as well. I have been transitioning in an endless loop from sadness to frustration to trying to ignore everything so that I can spend time with my young kids.
Many friends abroad have carefully asked how the family is doing and what the hell is going on in Israel. I finally managed to find some time to gather my thoughts and share a little about the current situation in Israel and Hamas’ barbarian actions, violating the Geneva Convention in the most flagrant way. The same Hamas organization that has been governing Gaza since 2007.
Our children, aged 6-8, know almost nothing about the horror washing Israel this past week. Well, nothing, besides the daily trips to the shelter due to Hamas’ rocket attacks on Tel Aviv. We are lucky though, since many other families in Tel Aviv lack a shelter in their house so they either "manage" without one or relocate to another place with a shelter. They are lucky though as well since families in other cities spend hours in shelters, on a daily basis. Schools are closed, reminiscent of the Covid era. We are all lucky though since we are alive and together.
A colleague, recently married, a bright engineer, a truly special person whom I can't remember seeing even once not smiling (seriously), was killed while rescuing hostages in 'Kibbutz Be'eri'. A relative was slaughtered by the Hamas "freedom fighters". Most Israelis I know suffered a loss. The pain is immense.
Those "freedom fighters" beheaded and burned babies alive, raped women, killed whole families and took babies and elderlies, including an 85 years old holocaust survivor as hostages. They even posted their acts on victims' Facebook feeds to demoralize us.
Hamas killed over 1,300, injured 3,400 and kidnapped around 150. Israel's population is under 10M. All this happened while we are divided over a judicial reform, Israel's most difficult political situation ever. A carefully picked timing for these barbarian acts.
Yet, make no mistake. Hamas actually STRENGTHENED and united us. The military reserve duty participation is much higher than 100%. Not only did the hundreds of thousands of people drafted showed up, but also many other people who were not called showed up. Other people are volunteering and helping in any way they can.
The phrase ‘Never again’ became popular after the Holocaust. It means that Jewish people will not fall again. Hamas’ inhuman actions are akin to those of Isis and the Nazis. Hamas will face the same fate. ‘Never again’, Hamas will be extinct. The road ahead is painful, many innocent people will suffer, yet it will lead to a much safer world. ‘Never again’!
