The persistent deficit of strategic thinking and leadership in cybersecurity is a critical issue, compounded by the widespread stubborn perception of CISOs as mere senior technologists rather than true strategic leaders. This misperception is more than just a career-limiting mindset; it has real consequences for organizations.
When CISOs are boxed into the role of the top tech experts, their focus narrows to the technical minutiae—firewalls, patches, encryption—at the expense of broader strategic objectives. Instead of managing risk and enabling the business mission, CISOs act as technology buyers and managers.
This approach misses the mark, as it neglects the crucial role of cybersecurity in driving business resilience and innovation.
The result? A reactive, fragmented security posture that struggles to keep pace with both evolving threats and business demands.
This situation is further exacerbated by what I propose to call "cyber iatrogenesis": ostensibly well-intentioned decisions, driven by fear or a narrow focus on compliance, often leading to unintended harm. Over-engineered security solutions can stifle productivity, misaligned strategies can suffocate innovation, and poorly designed incident response plans can turn crises into disasters. These outcomes are direct consequences of a lack of strategic foresight and leadership.
What’s needed is a fundamental shift in how we view the role of the CISO. Instead of relegating them to the realm of technical oversight, we must recognize them as strategic leaders—integral to the executive team—who can align cybersecurity with business goals, foster a proactive security culture, and drive long-term resilience.
Without this shift, organizations will continue to fall into the trap of short-term fixes and reactive measures, missing the bigger picture of what true cybersecurity leadership should look like.
