Ilias Belharouak

Head of Electrification Section at Oak Ridge National Laboratory

Dr. Ilias Belharouak, a seasoned Distinguished Scientist, leads the Electrification Section at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee and is a Professor at the Bredesen Center for Interdisciplinary Research and Graduate Education at the University of Tennessee Knoxville.

Dr. Belharouak has a rich background, having served as the Editor of the Journal of Power Sources at Elsevier and as the Founding Chief Scientist of the Electrochemical Energy Storage Center at the Qatar Environment and Energy Research Institute.

With a focus on battery research, Dr. Belharouak's expertise spans from medical applications to electric vehicles and energy storage grid projects, and his interests include lithium-ion and beyond lithium-ion battery technologies, battery materials, electrolytes, engineering battery components, diagnostics, and postmortem analysis.

Throughout his career, Dr. Belharouak has been honored with prestigious awards and acknowledgments, including R&D-100 innovation awards, Federal Laboratory Consortium Awards, and recognition from the U.S. Department of Energy and the U.S. Congress.

Dr. Belharouak holds a Ph.D. in Materials Science & Solid State Chemistry, a Master's degree in Materials Science and Solid State Chemistry, and a Bachelor's degree in Inorganic Chemistry.

His contributions to the field are evident through over 150 peer-reviewed papers, 300+ conference papers and extended abstracts, 30 U.S. Patents, and 5 books authored and coauthored by him. He has also been a sought-after speaker globally, with over 50 invitations.

Prior to his current roles, Dr. Belharouak held significant positions at renowned institutions like the Hamad Bin Khalifa University, Argonne National Laboratory, and CNRS.
