Why do I focus on scale ups?

My work as a consultant in strategy and leadership development leads me to uncover a whole host of fascinating things.

In the picture below is ‘Dunbar’s Number’ which is all about the social connections a person can have.

Let me take you through it.

📍5 is the number of your closest connections that a person has. This is your top 5 peeps. Family, partner, best friend. In a work context this is your immediate team. Your boss, your daily co-worker.

📍15 is the number of good friends someone can maintain comfortably. Within work this might be your wider team mates and people you interact with regularly, say a weekly catch up.

📍50 is the number of friends you can maintain in your wider social circles. For work this could help your business unit, your area of the business or a country/region.

📍150 is the maximum number of meaningful relationships a person can maintain. After this point, it becomes ‘known faces’ and acquaintances. Within work, this will be either the company, or the geography or ‘customer facing’ for example.

Now I tend to work with clients who are at 100-500 people size. This is where my advice and support can be really valuable to assist in helping set up the structures to scale so that once we go from 100 to 500 we can do it with speed and not lose any momentum or cause disruption to the business or things are starting to creak and we need to take action to rectify it now.

Once a business gets to this size, leadership and management becomes vital to keep everything moving and growing in the right direction. This layer of people with make or break the business.

Then I sit down with my clients to review their strategy and look at how we align this to the level of leaders that need to make this a reality for everyone else around the business.

This is where leadership development, coaching and communication strategies come in.

Helping scale ups at this point is incredibly rewarding and impactful so I get to see the results of the work that we do together quickly which make me very proud.

Have a think about your own connections, is Dunbar’s number right for you?

Anything surprise you about the numbers?

The power of visualisation

Fun fact, your brain does not know the difference between what is real and what is imagined.

It’s the same neural pathway.

What does this mean for you?

It means that you can use the power of visualisation to rehearse something coming your way this week to build your confidence and muscule memory in it!

A survey of Olympic athletes revealed that 90% of them practice visualisation as part of their training routine. It increases performance AND reduces anxiety!

It can improve results as much as actually doing the thing!

This week, take 5 mins to visualise something to help build your confidence in that skill.

Your future self will thank you.
