Highlights
THE AUDACITY OF THIS EDITOR! I could not believe this was their response and it’s beyond unprofessional!
I have never had such a response that spoke so highly of another candidate versus just telling me that I didn’t get a position.
To note, this editor reached out to me to interview with them for this position. I interviewed and it went well.
The person then emailed me at 12:28am (midnight) on a Friday saying that I would need to email pitch ideas for an edit test by EOD on Friday because they were going on vacation. Yet they knew I had just gotten to London with my son to see family.
This person then told me that they then wouldn’t be able to take my ideas on a Monday due to them being on vacation but was willingly inconveniencing me at the same time. Then upon this editor’s return, I received this email which was indeed a slap in the face.
Also, I did ask for more per hour because I am an award-winning travel journalist, who’s lived around the world, who has a vast experience in the world versus sitting behind a desk and taking press trips because I’ve been a staffer. I REFUSE to allow anyone to diminish how I show up in this industry and what I bring to the table.
To any new writers in the industry:
- Ask your worth. Figure out what that is and ALWAYS negotiate.
- Your resume is YOUR resume and no one is entitled to measure that against someone else’s.
- NEVER get despondent when you don’t get a gig. Something better is on the way! #freelancer #freelancewriter #journalism
