"People with disabilities can spend a lot of their time just waiting."

That observation from a long-ago meeting with an I/DD provider agency has always stuck with me. It's the time spent waiting after a medical appointment for other appointments to wrap up so they can go back home. Waiting nearly two hours (one-way!) in a bus going to a day program. Waiting for the group home vehicle to be available so that they could go out into the community.

Time is often the most valuable asset people have. All of that waiting, which can send the message that their time is less important, can undermine any progress they make day to day.

That is why we are grateful to work with Services for the UnderServed (S:US), one of the largest non-profits in New York, to set a new standard for transportation coordination for people with intellectual / developmental disabilities (I/DD).

There is a long road ahead, because systemic change takes time, but we have a real opportunity to give people (and the staff / families who support them) precious time back.

Thanks to Jorge R. Petit, MD, Perry Perlmutter, Monica Santos, Jajaida Gonzalez, Melissa DaCosta-England, Chris Fernandez, Chris Coates, Gabe Erwin, Alfredo Andrade, Ashley Nelson and many others from S:US and Ride Health who have set the foundation for what will be a transformative partnership, not only within I/DD but also across a range of areas including Behavioral Health, Veterans and Homeless services.
