The Hidden Guilt of Rest and Overcoming the Pressure to Always Be On

As the last days of the official vacation season come to a close, I've been having conversations with my clients about the discomfort they feel when trying to fully disconnect.

Many struggle with overwhelming guilt and unease when doing nothing. For some, not feeling productive is more stressful than simply checking their email. And those who do manage to leave their work behind often find themselves in a state of quiet panic about what will be waiting for them—hundreds of emails, unexpected projects, and the crushing weight of catching up. The moment they return, it’s as if the vacation never happened, plunging them into a state of despair.

As an entrepreneur, I know this feeling all too well. There's always a sense of obligation to work, knowing that every hour I put in directly impacts my earnings. Every opportunity feels like a priority, and the idea of taking even an hour off seems like a risk. The thought, “It’s just an hour of coaching; I’ll be able to relax afterward,” often crosses my mind. But the reality is that it takes time and effort to shift into work mode, and just as much to shift back out in order to truly relax.

When people asked me what my plans were for vacation, they often looked puzzled when I answered that I had no plans—that I would do nothing or anything I wanted in the moment. My vacation in Miami was magical as I enjoyed just being myself, without the pressure to do something or be a certain version of myself. Aside from one day exploring the city, my schedule was blissfully simple: gym, delicious meals, a good book, TV, and deep conversations about life. A close and dear friend encouraged this slow, beautiful pace of life, where the moment itself was enough. It felt like true luxury.

It’s not just about knowing how to work hard—it's about mastering the art of rest, too. Professional athletes have to master that relationship. Whatever intense workout we do, we must be aware that we need to return tomorrow with full energy. We need to consider how to structure the intensity of work so we show up at our full capacity, especially at the moments that matter most, to have a better chance of succeeding. Recovery and rest are integral parts of fueling high performance, and it is true professionalism to learn how to implement that balance.

What’s your definition of rest, and how do you recharge best?

If rest feels like a guilty pleasure and overwhelm is your constant companion, let’s connect and figure out a better path together.
