Medyka, Poland. Our tent is the first one in an eclectic row of other tents, food carts and first aid stations. From where we are, we can see refugees walking across the border, with children, suitcases and plastic grocery bags in tow. Vast majority of them are women, children and elderly, walking slowly weighted down by their cargo, exhaustion, horrendous experiences that they seem unable to leave behind.

Because our tent is almost at the border, the time on our smart phones is still set to Ukraine time, where, just a few yards into the camp, it forwards by one hour to a Polish time zone. Our residents, especially the elderly, seem to also be frozen in time, hardly believing they are already in Poland, that they have already crossed into a new phase in their lives.

Confused, questioning “what is the next step”, “when can we go back?”, “where do we go now?”, these women have to chart the course for themselves, their children and elderly in their care. Most of them had to leave behind not only their loved ones (husbands, sons, parents, siblings), but also their known life, homes, jobs, and the homeland they call their own, the one they love ever more.

The Medyka camp is but a thoroughfare between the border and the actual refugee camp, a large supermarket that had been converted into a facility where refugees can receive information and assistance in getting to their destination, and also receive a short-term respite while awaiting their next train or bus to whatever their new (and as most of them hope, temporary) place of residence.

The women here are of different ages, are coming from different parts of Ukraine, bound for different destinations, yet, what unites them all is the common reason they ended up at Medyka, and the same question asked in Ukrainian and Russian: “why did this all have to happen?”
