My adventures in AI continue, but this time it’s a crossover that combines Midjourney and Photoshop’s new darling, Generative Fill. In my last post I discussed my journey from objects to people wearing objects and the crash course in photography I took along the way. I decided to use everything I’d learned so far and revisit conjuring objects in Midjourney. This time the results were much better and far more consistent.
I’d say there were fewer surprises but every surprise is so potent with unexpected detail and potential inspiration for a new prompt.
I’m sharing the few concepts I thought were the most interesting, some of which I feel I could actually design and produce. Given my experience in architecture, product design, manufacturing and 3D printing I can definitely see a path where generative AI tools are used for realizing obscure concepts that eventually, with slight modifications, find themselves in the hands of real people.
Btw, all images were rendered in either a 2:3 or 3:2 aspect ratio after which Generative Fill was used to expand each image into a 1:1 aspect ratio.

Been experimenting with AI via midjourney recently. It’s been 6 months or so since I last used midjourney so there was a lot to catch up on. Fortunately, their documentation is very straightforward and helpful. I already see endless potential with this tool.
Within a week I went from throwing shit at the wall (to it’s credit, it was pretty decent shit) to understanding different camera models, lighting, lighting position, viewing angles, scene, setting, etc. all things I’d learned to understand physically, as a designer and creator, but rarely to define verbally.
Within two weeks I’ve gone from making crudely shaped flowers based off of prompts found in a Tokyo hotel’s whiskey tasting menu to creating high definition, photorealistic concepts with accuracy and consistency. I even recruited the help of an accomplished photographer who’s helped me better understand what lenses to use in what situations and how to set key lights.
The goal is to see how far midjourney and the like can be pushed as hi-res concepting tools from which ideas can be pulled directly into reality.
The experiments are just getting started and there’s still a lot to learn. Posting daily on IG. Follow along @oddresearchgroup.
