Highlights
✅ First full month as a freelancer!
Working in audio for the first time as an assistant producer on the BBC’s World Service is among the fun new challenges.
After nearly 7 years as a text journo, it’s forcing me to think about storytelling in a totally different way. It’s not just covering the key moments; it’s also about highlighting voices that capture the story and can bring it to life (with the pressure of the live radio show looming…)
Last week, it meant scrambling together an eclectic and brilliant group of speakers for the BBC’s World Business Report, including:
Bloomberg’s Hannah Miller (who made the Spellcaster podcast, covering the debacle of FTX), talking on CZ’s prison sentence
Former Argentine presidential candidate Juan Grabois, discussing Milei’s reforms amid protests in the country
Zapp VP (and former rival!) Steve O'Hear rooting for the grocery delivery business in light of Getir’s retreat
And marijuana startup founder Wyatt Harms, who is operating in weed friendly New York, and sees big opportunity in a federal legal-loosening
When I’m not at the Beeb, I’ve also been working with former Downing Street advisor Jimmy McLoughlin OBE to grow his podcast, and helping accelerate his young, bright team. Media startups gave me my first break in journalism, and it’s refreshing to be working again with a motivated and experimental founder.
This month, I’ll be moderating for tech groups and trying my hand at my first long-read commission. Say hi if you’re in London or Manchester!
Friday was my last day at Reuters after 2 magical, magical years in Mexico!
Working on the breaking news desk has been a whirlwind, covering everything from political assassinations and biblical droughts, to murky elections and even murkier deals. I am grateful to my fantastic colleagues for their mentoring and enthusiasm throughout, on what has been an unforgettable journey. I also managed to get onto the Reuters podcast as my final hurrah, which you can listen to in the link around minute 7!
I'm excited to be heading back to Europe now to double down on developing engaging modes of storytelling and investigations. I'm in the process of deciding next moves, so if you're working on anything fun, I'd love to hear!
Hasta luego, Mexico!
