Into the Discomfort Zone!

How often do you find yourself in situations where your fight-or-flight instincts kick in? Moments when anxiety builds, and you start creating all sorts of excuses in your head? I’m not talking about minor excuses like “Oh, maybe I should skip today’s run because my throat feels scratchy,” but those intense moments when you deeply wish you were anywhere else and regret every decision that led you to this point.

Last week, I participated in the Östhammar Adventure Race ((https://lnkd.in/dibzyH2R). It was 12 hours of kayaking, running, and cycling. That’s the shorter version, there’s also a 36-hour edition! Initially, I thought it wouldn’t be too bad to participate. But there is the kayaking. No matter how hard I try, I just can’t seem to get the hang of it. My technique is terrible, and the kayak is more of a death trap than a vessel. I don’t fit comfortably, my legs cramp, and after just a short time, the back pain becomes really intense.

On the way to the race early that morning, I regretted my decision to participate more than ever. But I had committed to a team, so I pushed through. I try to remind myself that experiencing these feelings is good for the mind. It had been a couple of years since I last felt this kind of intense fear—probably the last time was when I had to do a pitch solo because my partner got banned due to COVID. At least then, I didn’t feel like my life was at risk!

This post isn’t about bragging about my performance. (Our team finished dead last—of those who completed the race!) But we had a great time, sore muscles, and most importantly, we’re still alive.

This post is about facing your fears, also if you’re a middle-aged potato like me. Whether it’s skydiving or presenting to the board or doing that toast speech, push yourself into the discomfort zone every now and then. It’s good for you. I think it is.

Go best team #glitterochgegga. (Mimmi Andersson, Karin Lannergård, Mattias Sundstedt, yours truly. Photo by Karin.)
