😇 👨🏫 One of the best well-kept secrets of teaching and facilitating is that nobody in the room learns more than yourself. If there is a program that is highly illustrative of this general wisdom, this is "Moonshot Thinking for Startup Founders", a leadership program where C-level executives and founders from top startup companies immerse in a 3 to 4-day experience where they are confronted with really tough questions and scenarios about their self-leadership, values, culture, future global ambitions and the resilience of their companies' business models. 🙏 🚀 After this year's edition in Barcelona, I am personally super grateful for being inspired by every single program participant: executives and founders building the next generation of global companies from Spain and Portugal. They are not only building and scaling amazing companies, but also imbuing everyone with an optimistic "can-do" mindset that is truly transformative and also informative about the futures that we can enable together. 🙏 👩🚀 Finally, I am also incredibly grateful to the whole ecosystem of program partners that we have put together: Esade Executive Education Anna Font Xavier Ferràs Elena Yndurain, CaixaBank DayOne Vanessa Palmer Gemma Beltran, Enisa con el emprendimiento innovador Ricardo Sánchez Pedreo Jordi Hereu Kings League Kosmos Gerard Piqué Bernabéu Alex Bardera Echeverria CUPRA Svetlana Abanina Wayne Griffiths The Hotels Network Juanjo Rodriguez Kave Home Francesc Julià Ametller Arnau J. 🎬 When I watched "Dead Poets Society" for the first time in 1994 (5 years after its release in 1989), I was 20, in my second year at Esade's flagship "5-year Bachelor & Master" program. I was captivated by the atmosphere, the magic, the "Carpe Diem" spirit that Prof. Keating (Robin Williams) was able to recreate in a radically conservative boarding school based in Vermont. 🤖 30 years later, genAI is increasingly taking over a number of tasks which are crucial to the learning experience. As per my own research, there are at least three immediate layers of impact: 1) productivity gains in a broad sense, from content production to personalization at scale, where everyone will level-up very fast; 2) insights-generation, where AI will show us what we would have missed otherwise (more demanding in terms of data quality than simple efficiency gains); 3) judgment, where genAI will support decision-making as if it became the "spreadsheet" of critical thinking.
👩🎓 A few days ago, I had the honor to moderate a panel on AI in teaching, amazingly orchestrated by my colleague Jordi Mora and the whole team at Esade's CTL. Our ViceDean of Faculty, Mar Vila, as well as two of the leading voices in European higher ed, David Lefevre from Imperial College London and Leonardo Caporarello from SDA Bocconi, provided highly valuable insights about how the future might unfold. However, the sentence that was reproduced the most throughout the discussion was "we are still experimenting on this to figure it out". This couldn't be more true, as most innovations these days are fundamentally of an architectonical nature. In other words, AI will have an impact on how higher ed is structured and organized (with significant shifts in value capture), in the same vein as electricity reshaped the factory in the 20th century.
🔥However, in the meanwhile, during the process of "figuring out", which will certainly take time, and in an effort to reply to Jeff Bezos' iconic "What's not going to change" question, my personal bet is that the more AI we surround with, the more relevant the magic, the Keating-like atmosphere will become. As AI creates more and more pockets of predictability, managing the uncertain and unpredictable of a truly transformative learning experience will become the new scarcity.
ChatGPT, I honestly enjoy you.💜 But, Oh Captain! My Captain!!
