Highlights
Eddie was an inspirational entrepreneur and friend to entrepreneurs. Though very saddened by his untimely passing, I am eternally grateful for the many chats I had with him in NovaUCD. One of the last led to a discussion about Andres Iniesta, the Spanish soccer magician who said “If you win without sacrifice you enjoy it but it's more satisfying when you have struggled.” Sometimes in business as in sport, to achieve one’s goals a new team is required. Eddie’s story is a reminder that if the team doesn’t exist, don’t be afraid to build it. My sympathy to Eddie’s family, friends and colleagues. Keep his dream alive and realise it.
Nuclear future or a future unclear? This article in The Currency reminded me of the fact that Ireland’s longer term risk of over-emphasis on wind power is akin to its dependence on foreign direct investment (FDI). The direction and strength of prevailing wind is variable. Future energy independence will benefit from a grown up discussion about the green and obvious benefits of nuclear. Long term job and economic security will benefit from the right balance of FDI and indigenous enterprises. It’s time to be clear about nuclear and an energy-efficient and long-term effective economy; the alternative may be a future unclear.
