Jennifer Jackson

Molecular Ecologist at British Antarctic Survey

Jennifer A. Jackson is a Molecular Ecologist and Whale Biologist at the British Antarctic Survey (BAS), where she has been working since 2010.1 Her research focuses on the recovery of whale populations from whaling, whale population connectivity across oceans, and changes in whale populations and habitats over the past century.1 She is also interested in using high-resolution satellite imagery to monitor whale populations in remote areas like the Southern Ocean.1

Jackson's academic background includes:

  • Biochemistry and genetics studies at the University of Nottingham
  • PhD in evolutionary phylogenetics from the University of Oxford
  • Post-doctoral fellowships at the University of Auckland and Oregon State University1

At BAS, she is part of the Ecosystems program and works closely with the Wildlife from Space group.1 Since 2017, she has led three seasons of research on whale recovery in the sub-Antarctic South Georgia marine ecosystem.1

Jackson has been a member of the International Whaling Commission Scientific Committee since 2006 and has held leadership positions within the committee.1 Her research interests span evolutionary genetics, phylogenetics, population genetics, and population biology.3

She is also the Principal Investigator for the South Georgia Wild Water Whales project2 and has contributed to numerous scientific publications on topics ranging from whale genetics to cephalopod evolution.13
