Within my first month as a new (and nervous!) Senate policy advisor, a remarkable organization from Iowa approached me with an idea: how can we unlock additional resources to help prevent the thousands of stillbirths impacting families each year?
Stillbirth in the United States is a silent public health crisis. Nearly 21,000 babies are stillborn annually, 1 in 4 of which could be preventable. The U.S. recently ranked a shocking 183rd out of 195 countries in improving stillbirth rates according to the WHO.
Over the next three years, bipartisan partnerships, coalition building, and negotiations across Congress led to legislation that is now headed to President Biden for his signature.
All credit goes to Healthy Birth Day, Inc. for their incredible advocates to help move this initiative across the finish line. Despite more work to be done on this crisis, the journey has brought new alliances and lifelong friends.
A small part played for a brighter future for babies and families makes for a great Friday sign off. Onward!
Awesome win for rural health care in the FY2023 omnibus! It was an honor to lay the groundwork for designating an Office of Rural Health at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). While this was the work of many, I have to give a huge thanks to Kendall Garraway Moore for the great bipartisan partnership in getting this mutual goal across the finish line! Onward to advancing rural health! #politics #publichealth
