Highlights
Are we sourcing goods from deforested national parks?
Is anyone in our supply chain using child labour or slave labour to extract their raw materials?
Is this product what our label says it is?
Unfortunately, for the largest brands and retailers in the world, these questions aren’t always straightforward to answer. Supply chains are incredibly complex with product passing through many hands and crossing international borders multiple times. Cotton, for example, typically passes from farmer to ginner to trader to spinner to fabric mill to cut & sew before it reaches a retailer. Consumers and regulators are rightly demanding the retailer take responsibility – but how?
By using Oritain, a company boasting one of the most unique applications of technology Highland Europe has ever seen. Using elemental chemistry, Oritain can pinpoint the origin of materials from coffee and cocoa to leather and cotton. “It’s like magic” said one customer we spoke with.
On a personal level, this is a milestone first-time lead investment for me, committing almost $50,000,000 of this Series C round. I’m incredibly grateful for the trust and support of my partners and colleagues at Highland Europe and most importantly, to Grant Cochrane and the entire team at Oritain for welcoming us onboard.
Finally, we are delighted to be co-investing and joining the board with our friends Angad Singh, Andrew Cedar, Alberto de Benedictis, Shanti Atkins, Jeff Levick and Sir John Key.

The good news is that there is a solution. One championed by Descartes Underwriting amongst others. Read more here
