Jahan Peston Jamas is a co-founder and director at Bombay Hemp Company Pvt Ltd, India's pioneering industrial & medical hemp(cannabis) company. A graduate of H.R College Of Commerce and Economics, he has studied Commerce, Economics, Advertising, Sales, Marketing, and Human resources. Mr. Jamas previously served as an Entrepreneur In Residence at Singularity University and co-founded Nanobinoids, a company that focuses on the pharmaceutical applications of nanotechnology.
With BOHECO, Mr. Jamas has been instrumental in helping the company work with local farmers and industries in manufacturing and researching innovative agro-products that are environmentally friendly and sustainable. These products include textiles, ayurveda, foods, phyto-pharmaceuticals, nano-materials, lubricants, automobile, oil, and cordage industries from the industrial & medical hemp crops.
Highlights
It was the end of 2019, just months before a virus changed the world. At that time, our existence at Bombay Hemp Company Private Limited was already precarious. We had reached a crucial inflection point, realizing we couldn’t continue as we had for the past decade. We needed to pick our battles more selectively and commit to specific industries like Health & Wellness and Textiles. This process, though necessary, left me with sleepless nights, ridden with anxiety about missing golden opportunities and second-guessing BOHECO's future. By the end, we had a clear direction of the future with BOHECO. However, just when the new era at BOHECO was being built, the pandemic hit the entire nation. We had just commenced work with our Clinical trial partners at National Institute of Ayurveda Jaipur (Pictured below with the BOHECO team during discussions at the height of COVID) and Tata Memorial Hospital (Mumbai). Though, now both us and our partners were staring at a barrage of massive challenges; such as recruiting patients for trials in the middle of a pandemic when the only reason any patient would step foot near a hospital would be for COVID treatment, or for that matter navigating the logistical complications of manufacturing our Hemp medicines and having them transported across state borders as medical priority to these institutes. Amusingly and ironically, one of our trials was centered around Stress/Anxiety management, which got me thinking that with the High stress & anxiety we were operating at during this period, we ourselves would have made the perfect patients for the trial. Personally, it was a gut-wrenching experience that heavily impacted my optimism and confidence. The weight of responsibility felt heavier than ever, leading to countless sleepless nights filled with anxiety and self-doubt. I questioned my decisions, my leadership, and our future, feeling the relentless pressure of navigating through uncharted waters. That’s where the tide began to turn. As each of us encountered a host of unimaginable challenges, we understood that the only way out was through it together. At BOHECO, we created forums and safe spaces for openly sharing professional and emotional vulnerabilities, with a dash of humour to keep spirits high. This in turn led to each team member, including myself, gradually brimming with more confidence by the day to take these challenges head-on. It was that solidarity and ability to that created a paradigm shift for me as an entrepreneur in terms of the criticality of taking deep care of our mental health consistently through the simple act of sharing & being vulnerable amongst the people you trust the most. One of the key learnings for me through it all has been the duality of mental health when it comes to how we nurture it; with neglect & disdain, it becomes an eternally dangling albatross around one’s neck, however, with the right care & attention it turns into one's own superhero cape & bulletproof jacket.
I'm glad to share that the Bureau of Indian Standards, Government of India has formally introduced harmonized Standards for Cannabis leaves (Vijaya) to be used in Ayurvedic & Traditional medicines!
This marks another strong regulatory step towards enhancing the legitimacy of the Indian Cannabis/Hemp industry!
This landmark development is a significant stride towards responsible regulation and innovation, which seeks to validate Bombay Hemp Company Private Limited's commitment to quality whilst establishing new benchmarks for compliance and credibility.
