James Anderson

Global Lead on Anticorruption

James Anderson is a seasoned development economist with over 25 years of experience, including 13 years spent living and working in Mongolia and Vietnam. Currently, he holds the position of Global Lead on Anticorruption for the World Bank. James served as the World Bank's Country Manager for Mongolia from 2014 to 2018, overseeing a wide array of activities in the region. His work in Vietnam from 2008 to 2014 focused on areas such as modern institutions, governance, anticorruption, and transparency. Prior to this, he dedicated his efforts from 1997 to 2008 to analyzing governance challenges in the transition countries of central and eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union, particularly focusing on corruption and judicial systems. His early career involved working on the institutions of a market economy, the informal sector, and privatization impacts during his time in Mongolia from 1993 to 1997.

James Anderson's educational background includes a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and a Master of Arts (M.A.) in Economics from the University of Maryland, College Park, as well as a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Economics and Finance from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. Over the years, he has amassed a wealth of knowledge and expertise through his academic pursuits and various professional experiences.

Throughout his career, James has held several key positions at the World Bank, such as Lead Governance Specialist, Senior Governance Specialist, Senior Economist, and Country Manager. He has also contributed as a Long Term Consultant and Short-term Consultant within the Development Research Group at the World Bank. Additionally, his prior roles include Field Coordinator in Mongolia at the IRIS Center, University of Maryland, College Park, and Lecturer at the University of Maryland.
