Highlights
🏊♀️Drowning is the leading cause of death for children ages 1-4 AND it is preventable. Children who receive swim lessons are 88% less likely to drown. This week I learned more from the people and organizations leading the state in water safety (including the CT Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, The Stew Leonard III Water Safety Foundation, and The Greater Waterbury YMCA) about the impact of swim lessons in preventing drownings. It’s inspiring to see these #Connecticut partners come together to raise awareness on such a critical issue.
📊In underserved communities, 79% of children in households with incomes less than $50,000 have no or low swimming ability. Drowning death rates for Black children ages 10-14 are over 7 times higher than White children. Additionally, 64% of Black, 45% of Hispanic/Latino, and 40% of Caucasian children cannot swim.
🚫💲Free swim lessons for children can make a significant difference in preventing tragedies. Programs across Connecticut have provided nearly 5,000 lessons to over 4,000 children, aiming to ensure every child has the opportunity to learn this life-saving skill.
Essential Water Safety Tips:
🔵 Always watch your children. Drowning is quick and silent. Stay within arm’s reach. 🔵 Drink responsibly. Swim sober. 🔵 Swim in designated areas and always with a buddy. 🔵 Know your limits and be aware of underwater hazards. 🔵 Use U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets for children and inexperienced swimmers.
Get involved, learn more, and ensure that EVERY child can safely enjoy the water this summer. Stay safe and make a splash responsibly!

I am excited to share a project close to my heart—the launch of our "Love Your Parks" t-shirt collection at DEEP. This line isn't just apparel. ❤It’s Art. ⭐ It’s Connecticut.
These designs, masterfully created by Joe Cunningham, DEEP's Visual Media Designer, draw inspiration from the elegant, vintage Works Progress Administration (WPA) posters. It was so fun watching Commissioner Katie Scharf Dykes recognize his talent and hard work today at Hammonasset Beach State Park and to announce the launch of the Love Your Parks Shop on CTParks.com
Working with Joe and witnessing his dedication and talent over the years has been truly inspiring, and these shirts are a testament to the same spirit, creativity, and hard work found throughout the CT Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.
I believe we have so much to be proud of in Connecticut, and it’s time we wear that spirit on the outside and be loud about it (And if you need another reason to feel good about starting a collection, all profits go directly back to the parks).
👀 And yes! We should have more sizes and items up soon. If you don’t see what you’re looking for now, please check back over the coming weeks and months. We’re excited to be able to roll out more designs and are also setting up a way to gather feedback directly from you all for suggestions!
Whether you’re a long-time park enthusiast or a newcomer to #ConnecticutStateParks, these shirts are a perfect way to show your love and support, so get yours today by visiting https://lnkd.in/gTJ8mhHK.
