👋 Hi folks, it's me, your friendly neighborhood trans lady.
Today is Trans Day of Visibility.
The original intent of TDOV is to remind the world that trans people exist, we are alive, and we're your friends, family members, coworkers, and neighbors.
I don't always feel like being visible. Some days it can feel like a target is painted on my back. But other days it can feel joyful -- especially when I can be in community with my queer and trans fam. It can also be a privilege and a responsibility.
I feel that responsibility very acutely lately, especially toward our trans youth. A lot of people in the US, the UK, and elsewhere seem to believe trans kids should not exist or not be supported. They seem to believe that by making social and medical transition harder for trans kids we are somehow helping them, since being trans is (to them) obviously a bad thing.
I was a trans kid. Closeted, unsure of myself, afraid to be myself. As a teenager, I did not have a lot of role models out there to show me you could be trans and be happy, healthy, and in community with people.
I'm here now, but it was a long journey to get here. I want to help bring about a world where we can provide support and community to trans kids, not rejection and persecution. So if my being visible can help even one young person feel slightly safer, it will be absolutely worth it. 🏳️⚧️
