I’m thrilled to share the news that I’ve joined the Board of the American Folk Art Museum. Thanks so much to Kiersten Busch and Antiques and The Arts Weekly for this thoughtful interview regarding why I’m so excited about the museum and decided to get involved. It also provides a little reveal into my own creative practice, which thus far I’ve kept very much under wraps.
If you are new to AFAM, it is a (imo “the”) leading museum focused on folk, self-taught, and outsider art, and it consistently puts on unique exhibitions that are masterful in translating deep scholarship into very accessible shows that resonate with a broad audience. Check out the current show on Francesc Tosquelles (subtitle: “Avant-Garde Psychiatry and the Birth of Art Brut”) to see what I mean (closes 8/18, and admission is always free!).
The reason the museum is so special is its people. Jason Busch and the entire team and Board are an amazing group of passionate leaders and advocates with a very exciting vision for the museum.
As I say in the article, I believe that we’re on the cusp of folk, self-taught, and outsider art being a central node in our cultural conversations.
You see that happening in all the museum exhibitions that are centered around these artists in the past several years. But also in the ways that internet culture, newly supercharged by AI, is turning everyone into a creator and thus, for many of us, a self-taught artist.
AFAM has the opportunity to lead these conversations, and I’m so excited to be a part of it and to do what I can to help. Thanks so much to you all for inviting me in.
