“The hottest new programming language is English”

In the spirit of all the exciting AI updates Apple announced yesterday, I thought it’d be great to share a breakdown of how to craft the perfect prompt when working with AI (H/T DAIR.AI).

As we continue integrating AI into our daily workflows, the importance of effective prompts cannot be overstated. A well-written prompt can be the difference between an AI that simply "works" and one that really excels.

Here are the key components of creating better AI prompts:

  1. Role Prompting: Assign a specific role to the AI. This helps with immersing the model into the task. For example, instead of saying "Classify this email," use “Imagine that you are an experienced email classification assistant."

  2. Chain of Thought: Encourage the model to think step-by-step. This technique has been shown to significantly boost accuracy, especially on complex, multi-step problems. Break down a task into clear, manageable steps for the AI to follow.

  3. EmotionPrompt: Use emotional stimuli to enhance the model's processing. Phrases like “Take a deep breath before you respond” or “This task is vital to my career" can lead to more thorough and accurate outputs.

  4. Context: Provide background information about the task and its importance. Many people expect AI to be ‘all-knowing’ (newsflash: it’s not). Think of most general models as highly capable junior interns who need to understand the full picture to be helpful. This additional context often leads to better understanding and execution by the AI.

  5. Few-Shot Prompting: Show examples to guide the AI. Few-shot prompting, where you provide a few examples of input-output pairs, significantly improves accuracy.

And if you want a quick reference as you try this out in your own workflow, think of the following steps as a formula:

  • Role
  • Task
  • Specifics
  • Context
  • Examples
  • Notes

It’s important to mention that you don't need to use all these components every time you interact with AI, but incorporating different prompt techniques for different tasks will almost certainly yield better results.

At NorthStar, our tech stack was miles ahead of other M&A advisors our size.

(I know this because I spoke with a lot of them)

Our obsession with standardizing processes freed up time to focus on providing a higher level of service to our clients, and we still receive compliments about our work to this day.

We implemented automations and processes for marketing, sales, onboarding, and research that boosted our efficiency significantly.

Of course, it took immense effort to achieve this, but the results were worth it.

Here’s a standout example:

One of the coolest engagements I managed from start to finish was a 'breeze' because of our investment in our stack. How it happened:

Lead Generation: The lead came through our website, which we had optimized for conversion at the time. Scheduling: The prospect booked a call using our round-robin Calendly integration. Agreement: We got the NDA and eventual Engagement Agreement e-signed via PandaDoc within two weeks of first contact. Relationship Management: We tracked leads and deals in HubSpot at the time (switched to Affinity.co later). Project Management: After the deal was signed, we followed the key workflows in Asana and stored docs in Box. Research: For research, we used a variety of the usual sources like PitchBook, Crunchbase, CapitalIQ, IBIS World etc  Internal Communication: We used Slack for internal communications. File Storage & VDR: We used Onehub as a simple VDR solution.

Setting tools up to make work easier felt natural, but after seeing how other shops operated, I realized we were ahead of the curve.

This and other experiences showed me the undeniable value of leveraging technology to enhance operations, something I now want to share with other firms.

If you want to learn more about how to make your apps & tech systems work better together using tools like Zapier or Make, I’ll be sharing more content about this regularly so make sure to follow along.

And if you'd like help optimizing your tech stack to improve operations for significant ROI, I'd be happy to do a free audit to provide 2-3 key areas you can focus on immediately.
