Finding Value in Every Human: A Lesson in Openness
In our daily interactions, it’s easy to dismiss opinions that clash with our own. We often encounter individuals whose views we find disagreeable or uninformed, leading us to disregard their perspectives entirely. However, my trainer, Sam Ives, recently shared a compelling insight that challenged this tendency for me.
You've likely heard the adage, “Even a stopped clock is right twice per day.” This phrase is typically used to diminish the value of a correct statement from someone we generally disagree with.
Sam reminded me of Charlie Munger's Inversion principle when he stood this on its end. He proposed that if we cannot acknowledge a single correct notion or redeemable quality in someone, then we are likely overlooking something of value. Regardless of our personal opinions of someone, if we pay attention, everyone offers at least a glimmer of insight or a valuable truth. No one is 100% wrong.
I love this approach because it not only enriches our personal growth, but also fosters inclusivity and empathy as worthwhile habits. As we navigate our fitness journeys and life’s various challenges, let’s be more like Sam. We can do the heavy-lifting of looking for the positive in people even if we can't deadlift quite as much as Sam can.
My name is James Todd and I help leaders learn and learners lead.

Transformative Journeys: I was one of the earliest remote workers at Dell
In 2003, I found myself at a crossroads between love and professional growth. My then-partner, Lori, was invited on a mission to make a difference in Kampala, Uganda. Her dedication to teaching English to orphans tugged at my heartstrings, and when she asked if we could move there, I didn’t hesitate to say yes.
At the time, I was three years into my journey at #Dell, riding the fast track to success. I was involved in projects that were not only challenging but also rewarding, like reducing costs related to wrong orders and returns, and assisting on a Six Sigma project that was set to save millions.
At the time, the idea of working remotely at Dell was unheard of for someone who wasn’t an account executive, so a request to work from Africa sounded downright ridiculous to many. But I knew I could figure out the logistics to be successful, that the answer would be no if I didn't ask, and magic happens when people believe in you.
I pitched the idea to my manager, Greg Gotham, and together we approached the site director. To my delight, Ted Colpo agreed to a one-month trial with no promises to continue if it wasn't working. That one month turned into a transformative eight months for my family.
Lori thrived in her role as a teacher, and I, working overnights, supported my teams back in Texas and Tennessee, ensuring seamless operations.
The project I led saved Dell over $2M. Greg's project, which I supported, saved over $5M.
This journey wasn’t just about project management or remote work; it was about the human spirit, belief, and support. It’s one of the many reasons I spent nearly a quarter-century at Dell, a place where leaders empower team members to make a difference. Dell truly offers the power to do more.
As you reflect on your path, remember that unconventional choices can lead to the most remarkable destinations. I'm reminding myself of that too as I explore what's next!
